Crispy Duck with Hoisin sauce

Crispy duck with hoisin sauce and pancakes is one of my absolute all time favorite meals in the whole whole world. The crispy shard like skin, the tasty morsels of duck and the sweet sticky taste of the hoisin, all wrapped up with cucumbers and spring onions in a wafer thin pancake . Nothing could be better, but I have yet to ever eat it here in Korea. I’ve had it on visits to China of course, and I can’t wait to go to the crispy duck capital of the world this Christmas but I couldn’t wait until then for my next fix. About a week or two ago I found out that hoisin sauce is available here in Korea and it’s been hiding in plain sight in dear old Homeplus. How many times have I brought jars back from home only to have them disappear from my life in mere days, when there was ample stock here in the peninsula. I could kick myself indeed. For future reference, this is what the jar looks like, so go forth and stock your cupboard full of the Chinese saucy goodness.

Calcotada

Finding new and cool places to eat is actually pretty easy these days, a walk around my neighborhood offers up a plethora of new options week in week out as more and more buildings are turned into eateries to feed the hordes of people visiting our hood. Last week I was invited by the owners to come and try the food at Calcotada in Gyeongridan. Located just up on the hill past the Police station, it’s hidden away from the crowds which I always find desirable in an eatery, ain’t nobody got time for queuing. (more…)

Pecan & Bacon encrusted Doughnuts

Just last week I made my first attempt ever at making doughnuts, and I have to say I bloody nailed it. They were soft as clouds inside, and were almost good enough to rival those pillowy pieces of heavenly goodness at Krispie Kreme. I glazed these goodies with pieces of crispy bacon and pecan nuts. It was a match made in heaven and they were quite the delight. I’m already thinking of wild and wonderful ways to put these two together again, and thinking of new flavours. The doughnuts aren’t really too taxing in terms of skill, just a little on the time, but come on, it’s cold outside, it’s not like you have anything better to do whilst your sat at home watching the telly. Linus’ Bama Style BBQ – 라이너스 알라바마스타일 바비큐

Linus has been the talk of the town for months now, ever since he finally quit pop ups and opened up a restaurant full time he’s all anyone can talk about. His southern style barbecue is the taste of home that people have been craving for years.  Earlier this summer he started out with a flaccid opening to perfect his craft and begged for no reviews until after the grand opening. I kindly obliged his request which is why I have waited until now to post my review, that coupled with busyness and laziness. I was also waiting for him to perfect the cocktail list, you know I can’t eat without some booze in my belly, it’s bad for my digestion!

Bang Bang Chicken Salad

I realize that it’s terribly cold right now, and a salad recipe isn’t exactly what everyone is craving, but I whipped this up for dinner last week and it was so good I had to share it. I haven’t had Bang Bang Chicken in donkey’s years. But it’s my little brother’s favourite Chinese dish in the whole wide world. Every time we go for Chinese back home he insists on ordering it. I had all but forgotten about this dish, but when I was trying to figure out what to do with my chicken breasts the other night it came screaming back to me. I luckily had all the ingredients in my cupboard so I was able to whip it up in just a flash. (more…)

XII – Twelve

Last Friday night I ventured to HBC’s latest and greatest acquisition XII. That’s twelve in roman numerals for those that skipped that class in school. Armed with a motley assortment of my closest friends we hit the bar hard.

Sweet East

Happy Peppero Day! I hope you are all enjoying the fun of the festive season and are laden down with more pepperos than you could ever eat. This year there are more flavours than ever for you to feast upon, so fingers crossed I get gifted some of the new tiramisu ones today!

The delicious treat I bring you today is the fabulous and fantastic funnel cake. Until a few days ago I was a funnel cake virgin. Never in my life has this oddly shaped doughnut batter touched my lips. Why oh why has this glorious treat never made it to Britain’s sweet shores? I feel for sure it could be just as popular as it is in the states. Anyhow, the funnelicious people at Sweet East have finally brought this obesity inducing dessert to Korea, hurray! (more…)

Courgette Cakes with Chunky Salsa

Being a food blogger isn’t always easy. I’m under constant pressure to come up with new and exiting recipes all the time, which is probably why I have been eating out so much recently. We always have a fridge full of ingredients, it’s just a matter of compiling them in different ways to make new foods so things don’t get too repetitive. Courgettes are back in season now and dirt cheap. Usually  they just get relegated to extra status and thrown in at the last minute, but in this recipe they are the star of the show.  They are very easy to make as well as being tasty and filling, so just perfect for a weekday dinner. You could also substitute them in place of a burger for your vegetarian friends. I served mine with some chunky salsa. Chunky salsa is a lazy girl’s dream, as it requires far less chopping but retains all of the deliciousness.  (more…)

Meatballism

10672426_10152783551861142_8693226474744238690_n

After the disappointing and tiny dinner we had eaten at Locos, Team Fat Girl roamed the streets of Gyeongridan looking for sustenance. We eventually stumbled across new kid on the block Meatballism. Now I’m not usually one for putting balls in my mouth, but with a rumbly tummy on the go a meat ball sub seemed just the ticket to fill us all up. (more…)
