Sushi Itaewon

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

A good sushi joint can be hard to find in this wee city, and finding a good one that doesn’t cost a fortune is even harder still. But new kid on the block Sushi Itaewon is certainly a good contender. Situated on the corner of an alleyway just off from McDonalds it’s located in Itaewon’s latest trend spot for new restaurants to come and peddle their wares.

While the restaurant is fairly small in stature with seating for around 20, the menu is more than ample with around 50 different items on the menu. It is broken into categories each with around a dozen options, sushi (3 piece), special sushi (2 piece) sushi roll (8 pieces) and special rolls. Each of the dishes ranges in price depending on the fish but most are between 1,700 and 3,700 with the special rolls costing around 9,000. We picked a selection of our favourites by marking them on the menu and handing it to the waiter.

No sooner had we made our order, when out came the complimentary miso soup. I love a good miso and I was looking forward to tucking into this one, but two spoonfuls in I found a little black hair in mine. Which quickly put me off eating any more. These things happen I understand, it’s just rather icky when it isn’t your own.

Beers were ordered to help me through the turbulent time which was hair-gate. They have a range of Japanese beers and sake available, but on this occasion I and more frankly my wallet was more than happy with a good old Cass. TFB went for the slightly fancier Hite Pale, both were 4,000 each.

Our first platter of sushi came out fairly quickly. I opted for the shrimp sushi (2,000) and the tofu (1,700), and TFB got the salmon with onion (2,700) and the salmon roe (2,600). The shrimp sushi was the standard splayed shrimp on a blob of wasabi and a bed of rice. The tofu rice filled nuggets were sweet and delicious, a steal at the price. Fish lover TFB adored his salmon, soft tender and fresh and the roe sweet balls of salty goodness. Wasabi, pickled ginger, and radish were also on the side, with as much soy sauce as we could handle.

Next up were the sushi rolls. We ordered a tempura shrimp roll (3,500), a tempura salmon roll (3,000) and a scallop roll (3,000). Mine of course were the tempura shrimp, very tasty and I was surprised to get 6 pieces. The rolls were a bit on the skinny side, but since they were so cheap you could easily get two portions. The scallops were fine, nothing special as I couldn’t really taste the scallops past the sauce they had used. TFB liked the salmon, but not as much as the ones he had earlier.

All in all we were rather happy with our meal, 26,000 for the lot which included a beer each. A nice spot for a casual meal or a place to sate those sushi cravings you have been having. Certainly a pleasant addition to the neighbourhood, and I’m sure I’ll be paying them another visit soon.

IKEA

On Tuesday I gathered all the courage I could muster and headed off to the new IKEA store in Gwangmyeong. It’s been absolutely years since I last ventured to IKEA and I had forgotten how big they are. When you add in the craziness of Korean shoppers you have got one hell of party on your hands. I went on a Tuesday afternoon and the place was still pretty busy so who knows how it would be on a weekend. Though I am assured that the craziness has been dialed down somewhat since it first opened and there were tailbacks for miles.

Little Baja

I do love a good taco, and when I heard all about Little Baja opening I was straight round there to give them a try. The place has only been open for a week, but thanks to Seoul’s gossipy foodie network it’s already experiencing queues and sell outs.

Crepe Cake

I have been wanting to make one of these fantastic crepe cakes for pretty much over a year now, but just haven’t ever quite got around to it. But with the timely coincidence of a friends birthday and pancake day, it was finally time to whip out that crepe pan. This cake is nothing short of a show stopper, with all those layers it looks absolutely magnificent and I was getting compliments about it the whole night long. The cake is actually rather easy in the skill department to make, as long as you can make a crepe you are golden, it’s just insanely time consuming to make, at around 2 hours. I think I actually under estimated that part, but you can always make the custard filling and the crepes the day before and just assemble on the day if you are short on time. But trust me, this cake is totally worth the time and effort.

Homemade Pimms

Pimm’s is without a doubt the quintessential British summer drink. No picnic, or sunny day in a beer garden is complete without a jug or five of this fabulously fruity concoction. However this fab favourite of mine is impossible to find in Korea, probably due to the insane amount it would cost to import. Luckily Bulldogs opened its doors last year and salvation was finally here, but it also got me thinking how easy it would be to make myself. With just 3 ingredients from your amply stocked liquor cabinet, Pimm’s can be yours all year long. Luckily I had a bottle tucked away under the sink (aka my liquor cabinet) that I’d bought on my last trip home and I did a taste comparison, the original is a wee bit sweeter but overall it’s not bad at all, and will certainly fool all of your friends if you don’t let them in on the secret!

Popcorn Fudge

This fudge is TDF – to die for! The rich velvety goodness of the chocolate fudge interspersed with little crunchy nuggets of popcorn and pecans is pure heaven. It’s also super duper easy to make too. No skills needed what so ever and it makes a delicious gift for all your loved ones on Valentines day. Or you could just make it for yourself, because like Ru Paul says, “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else? Can I get an amen in here!” (more…)

Nutella Milkshake

10354812_10153011083981142_3475028447507637848_n

Nutella is probably the greatest food ever made. It’s rich and sweet sticky goodness is enough to take cupcakes, brownies, and pancakes from good to OMG!!! Even straight out of the jar it’s like a fingerfull of pure heaven. It’s absolutely marvelous stuff and I’ve yet to meet a person who doesn’t like it. It’s really so good you could add it to any dessert and magically transform it. This milkshake is the perfect combination as the milk and ice cream harmonize with the Nutella perfectly making it into a rich creamy delight you can drink. If you want to make your milkshake super thick then use just a small pinch of xanthan gum, which is super cheap to buy on i-Herb and can be used in a whole host of other dessert and drinks too. For the ice cream I used the milk Häagen-Dazs which is my new favorite flavour, it’s even better than the vanilla if that’s possible!
