When I heard that a new chicken teriyaki place had opened up in Haebangchon I put it on my list of places to try. However when I heard they were giving away their food for free it jumped straight to the head of the queue, and I ran there as quickly as my chubby little legs would carry me. (more…)
Twice a year the best neighbourhood in Korea plays host to the event of the season, the HBC fest. All the local bars and restaurants have dozens of bands and singers playing sets. Last night I went to my favourite HBC eatery for a night of Moroccan music and a special four course meal prepared by brothers and friends Wahid and Karim. Moroccan band Majdub completed their tour of Korea by finishing their last gig in the HBC sandwicherie. (more…)

I’ve been living in HBC for almost three years now and in that time I’ve seen a hell of a lot of changes. Though out of all the restaurants I have seen come and go, the one that has undergone more transformations than Lady Gaga is the newly renamed Fat Cat. When I first came to town it was known and beloved as Indigo. Then after a complete face lift it altered its name to Good to Go, before partnering up with Giovanni and becoming Il Gattino. And now finally it’s changed again and become Fat Cat. (more…)
Being a Brit I take my fish and chips very seriously. It’s one of the foods I hanker after the most. For me there is nothing more thrilling than the car ride home with a hot paper package upon your lap scalding your legs while the smell of salt and vinegar fills the air. The wait to get home just makes ripping into those fish and chips even better.
I’m always on the search for my burger holy grail, so when I heard that an awesome new burger place had just opened at the top in the hill in HBC I was straight up there to check it out. The 100 Food Truck Smoke & Grill is a food truck-cum-hole in the wall located up on the hill. There is seating for about 6 in the back of the restaurant, along with a few tables for you to lean upon outside.
When Il Gattino came to Haebangchon I was as happy as a clam, their wonderful home made Italian food was the real deal and just what our neighborhood had been longing for. They were a massive hit straight off the bat, thanks to their fabulous food and the friendly and welcoming atmosphere that owner Giovanni provided. However with the popularity came the crowds and they soon found that their current location was a tad too small, so they left HBC and went off in search of bigger premises. Finally after being denied the pleasure of eating their wonderful food for over two months, they finally opened up their new restaurant called Brera in Beotigogae, and I went straight there to check it out.
Eating good healthy foods is something I have become very passionate about since I lost a substantial amount of weight last year. It’s not something I do 24-7, as I still enjoy fried foods far too much for that to ever happen, but I try to eat as wholesomely as possible for at least two meals a day which seems to balance out those times I get carried away and eat a whole pizza, cheesecake, or bucket of chicken. Since turning 30 I have certainly become more thoughtful about trying to give my body the nutrients it needs in able to function properly. As I have mentioned before I try to follow a raw till 4 diet or make meals using 1 ingredient healthy foods at least until dinner time, unless of course I’m hungover then all bets are off.
For the past month or two my favourite neighbourhood bar has been serving up brunch. They are already wildly sought after for their cheap drinks, awesome burgers, and incredibly handsome bar tenders but now there’s an even greater reason to go and pay them a visit, and that’s their incredibly tasty and well priced brunch. For the first few weeks it was being kept a secret, but now the word is out I thought it was about time I shared it with my loyal and faithful readers. (more…)
