I can’t believe it has been a month since my last post. As you may or may not know I have been working my ass off at the Pyeongchang Olympics. I didn’t mean to desert you all for so long, in fact I made sure I went to a whole host of places before I left so I would have something to share with you while I was gone but I ended up working a 90 hour week with no days off, and honestly all I did was work and sleep. Not that it hasn’t been an amazing experience and I will cherish it for the rest of my life. To make up for my absence I thought I would share another cheap eats, list style post, since you all seem to enjoy so much. In the past I did 7 under 7,000, I did 8 under 8,000, now it’s time for 10 under 10,000!
Souper – There is nothing like a a tasty bowl of soup to warm your cockles on a cold and miserable day. At Souper near Gongdeok they have an excellent selection of tasty Western style soups all priced between 5,800 – 7,800. Each bowl comes with lovely fresh bread too.
Maikatsu – This Hongdae eatery is probably the cheapest restaurant on here by far, you can get two meals on here for under 10,000 if you wish, or at the very least two meals for yourself. My favourite is their hayashi and rice (5,500), but you could also throw on a side of katsu and rice for an extra (3,500). They also have noodles and what not too, nothing is over 6,000.
Chuchara Mexican Eatery – The faux style Chipotle in Gangnam is super cheap, prices vary depending on the meat but the chicken dishes are cheap as chips. The gigantic stuffed chicken burrito is only 6,900. The carnitas will run you 8,400 and the steak 9,900, so everything on the menu is under 10,000.
Halal Guys – I think most of you know my fondness for the NYC street food chicken and rice, and last year we were very lucky that it finally came to Korea. The small size comes in at 7,900 while the regular comes in at 9,000, it is a hearty bowl filled with chicken, beef, or both, rice, salad, delicious white and spicy sauces. There are now location in Itaewon and Gangnam, with more set to follow!
Just BLT – While the best sandwich in HBC title belongs to the amazing Casablanca, I thought I should include this new place instead as the Moroccan sandwich featured on my previous lists. The BLT joint sells just BLT sandwiches at 8,500 a pop. There are 10 different mayos to choose from which makes each one unique. The thick cut bacon is made in house, as is the bread which is what makes it so delicious.
Morococo Cafe – I think we all love Casablanca for their amazing sandwiches but their restaurant across the street is also filled with delicious foods. The best thing on the menu is probably their fabulous rice bowl, which comes topped with chicken, lamb, or shrimp for under 10,000. You can also get a vegan version too.
Pancake Shop – For those who enjoy a sweet treat, pancakes are always very filling. I recently fell for the Pancake shop in Itaewon, which serves up a mightily fine stack of buttermilk pancakes for 7,000. You can also get a chocolate and cookie version for 10,000.
Vertex – Vertex has recently moved from HBC to Itaewon and has been taken over by new owners (review coming soon), but it is still just as delicious as ever, and now has a much bigger space for you to enjoy your food. The chicken over rice with veggies (9,900), is not only cheap it is tasty as hell too. Choose from teriyaki or black pepper sauce, both are incredible so make sure you go with friends so you can try them both.
Gino’s Pizzaria – At Gino’s pizzeria in Itaewon, you can get a big old slice of New York slice pizza, or even two for under the 10,000 mark. Their simple cheese slice is 4,000 a piece, while the pepperoni is 5,000. They also serve a specialty slice which changes daily. There is is seating inside so you can get your slice to go or stay.
Plus 84 – This Vietnamese restaurant has locations in Itaewon & Anguk. The bahn mi sandwiches are filling and tasty for around 7,000 or you can get a bit old bowl of pho for around 8,000. The menu is cheap with not many items going over the 10,000 won mark.
