I love a good taco more than anyone, and over the years Seoul has got better and better quality Mexican food. In fact nary a month guys by where there isn’t a new hot spot to try. It’s not often I go out of my way to try these new places, however when I found out that Kim’s Taco was located just across the street from my Korean class, I figured it would be the perfect place to go for lunch as an after class reward.
The Taco shop is located halfway between Yeoksam & Gangnam stations, just off the main road underneath a wedding shop. The place is quite small, and has a large open kitchen on one side and a small patio. Its a pretty informal joint, the menu runs along the top of the kitchen, and you order at the till and then grab yourself a seat.
I had heard amazing things about the tacos, which are made in house with masa corn dough. There are four types of filling: Pork, Chicken, Beef, and Fish. As we were dining as a trio we decided to order two each of the first three options. I tried the Pork Tacos (6,000 for 2), and the Beef Tacos (7,500 for 2). One bite and I was in heaven. The pork was marinated al Pastor style and had plenty of flavour, especially when topped with their incredible sauces. The green was fantastic, I usually find most green chili hot sauces to be needlessly spicy, but this sauce was all flavour with just a little heat. The red sauce will please spice fans as it packed more of heat punch. It has been a while since I had a taco this good, it really hit the spot, the fact that they were 6,000 for two was also a nice touch, most places charge at least 8,000 these days.
As well as the tacos we wanted to try a few other dishes, so we got the Carne West Fries (10,000) topped with steak, though you can also get pork or chicken, and a version made with nachos instead of fries. These topped fries were really quite special. While we were waiting for our tacos these really hit the spot. There was loads of yummy steak and a hearty scoop of guacamole, and we all loved them. They are perfect for sharing, and I’d love to try the nacho version too.
Lastly we got the Pork Tostada Bowl (11,000), again this comes with a variety of toppings. This salad bowl was something else. We all agreed it was magical, and so tasty. The crispy fried tortilla made a crunchy edible bowl, and was filled with spiced rice which was then topped with salad, beans, corn, salsa, pork, onion, cheese, and guacamole. This was the most filling dish of all, you would certainly leave full if you ordered this alone, I will be ordering it again on my next visit for sure.
Overall I thought this was an excellent taco joint. The tacos were legit, and everything we ate was hella tasty. The prices were also really good compared to other taco places in the city. We ended up paying only 13,000 each for what we had so it was a very cheap and tasty lunch. I’ll be going back for a visit again soon to try the other menu items that I missed out on this time.
