The Beastro – Brunch

Last weekend I went to brunch at one of my favourite restaurants in Seoul. It had been months since my last visit so I took a motley assortment of my most fabulous chingus to go check out the new brunch menu.

As always we were welcomed warmly by the staff and shown to a lovely table by the window. We got straight down to business and ordered a round of cocktails to sip while we had a look at the menu. I of course got my favourite Bloody Mary (13,000). The waitress asked how hot I would like it which I thought was a nice touch. The tomato juice used was very nice and not at all sweet, I’d really like to know where they got it.

The boys ordered the adorably named Breakfast Club (12,000). Whiskey, egg whites, maple syrup, cream and bacon. This cocktail was divine. Just so creamy and sweet with the lovely smokey flavour from the bacon. It was like drinking French toast. My only complaint was the size, as it was just far too easy to drink. They should do a super size version of it.

We decided to kick things off with the Chimichurri Fries (8,000). I have had them before but they were even better than I remember. The pesto style chimichurri sauce and grated parmesan on top were just the ticket to take them from fine to OMG. We were all fighting over these and they were gone in minutes.

For brunch I had to test the muster of their Egg’s Benedict (15,000). On the menu it comes with salmon but with my phobia of most things fishy, I switched mine out for bacon.

The thin slices of bacon were crisp and tasty, and on top of two of their incredibly mourish flakey pastry like biscuits.  The hollandaise has a lovely lemony flavour and as you can see the eggs were spot on. It came with home fries and a nice chunky salad. Excellent brunch material. They also have a biscuits and gravy which I am keen to go back and try next time, I would love to see how it compares to the one at Guilty Pleasure.

TFB opted to try the new Breakfast sandwich (12,000). Filled with a huge piece of omelet, avocado, bacon, and cheese. It was incredibly tasty and such an awesome price. The sandwich had a little bit of a spicy kick to it too which was probably the pico de gallo salsa. Nothing too overpowering, just the right amount. This one was closer to being inhaled than eaten as it was so good. It came with served with hand fried crisps, which were nice but I’d personally rather have a side of the home fries or chimichurri fries.

We also got my absolute favourite dish on the menu, the Fried Chicken and biscuits (17,000). On my first visit I waxed lyrically about this chicken so please read my more detailed description here. It is honestly one of the best meals I have ever eaten in Korea. I was scared that the amazing deliciousness of it had been over hyped in my imagination and it would never live up to my expectations but if anything it surpassed them. It’s a must order item for any chicken lover.

Very kindly the kitchen sent us over a couple of desserts on the house to try. We had all been clutching our bellies and complaining how full we were, but when they turned up no one could resist them.

The Lemon Meringue Pudding (13,000) was my favourite of the two. The ginger cookie crust was a real delight, and the lemon curd was tart and zingy and danced upon the tongue. Topped with a light and fluffy meringue it was a lovely ending to the meal. Owner Catherine remarked that she knew I would love this, as she had witnessed a spectacular fail on my part the last time I was there. I had brought a home made lemon meringue cake along for a friends birthday. It was July and not surprisingly the whole thing melted into oblivion by the time I even got to the restaurant. The poor kitchen staff had to do their best to resurrect it, but it was big old hot mess. Rather embarrassing indeed, but I guess an ugly cake is better than no cake at all.

We also tried the Apple Turnovers (12,000) with chestnut ice cream and crushed cacao beans.  This was a real winter dessert, sweet caramelized apples wrapped in pastry just screams cozy night in. The ice cream was lovely with the cinnamon and chestnut flavours really bursting through. Definitely a winner for those who like a hearty dessert.

We were all having such a wonderful time we decided to order another round of drinks. I ordered the Rumchata (8,500), I first tried this fabulous creation back in the Summer and it was just as good as I remember, sweet milky spiced rummy goodness and only 8,500. I could honestly drink these all day, and at that price I could actually afford to do it.

10897000_10153004950291142_340259903340915268_n

The boys opted for the Piss and Vinegar (8,500), and a Rosemary’s Baby (10,000). The Piss and Vinegar is a mixology marvel. I would never choose this cocktail myself but it has such a wonderful balance of sweet and sour and you can’t taste the Whiskey at all. The Rosemary’s Baby is also adorably named, and a lovely libation. The rosemary syrup really takes the edge off the bitterness from the grapefruit. Gin lovers will be a fan of this one.

All in all we had a fabulous brunch, and a good time was had by all. I would definitely put The Beastro in my top three brunches in the city. The food is modern and great value, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the cocktail menu is exceptional. Which all together makes the perfect brunch location for me, even if I do have to travel to Hongdae to get it. One word of warning, the place gets very popular at weekends so make a reservation to avoid disappointment!

The Beastro is located at 358-32 Seogyo Dong 2F, Mapo Gu, Seoul. To get there take a train to Sangsu station (line 6). Come out of exit 1 and turn back on yourself. Keep walking straight for about 5 minutes until you reach the Hongdae Park. Walk up the stairs till you reach the road that runs parallel and you should see The Beastro on the 2nd floor above M.A.C (Make-up and great food!!!). For more information call 02-334-2500 or check out their facebook page.

Guilty Pleasure

Last weekend I finally got around to trying the Brunch at Guilty Pleasure. God knows what took me so long as this place has been open for months and I eat more than my fair share of brunches, in fact I probably eat my fair share of other people’s brunches too! Continue reading

Mi Casa

10882114_10152901212801142_1230686112368516927_n

A few weeks ago I was invited to a luxurious dinner at Mi Casa along with the who’s who of the foodie world so they could launch their new collection of Spanish wines. I was thrilled to be invited, as it combined my three favourite activities – eating, drinking, and travel. The fact that I didn’t have to leave Itaewon to go there, was the cherry on top of the cake. Little Cuba

10525998_10152882916911142_6412822254804683385_n

Seoul’s food landscape is forever changing and in the 6 years that I’ve lived here, the change has been remarkable. Over time the city has become more and more international and there are very few foods you can’t get these days. A few months ago, Seoul’s first Cuban restaurant was opened in Sinchon. The owner and chef is Cuban Augusto Cesar Calzadilla, and he kindly invited me to come and try his food. I’ve never been to Cuba or eaten any Cuban food before so my interest was instantly piqued. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but my first thought was that it would be similar to the food we ate while travelling in South America, and after a little research I found out they did some excellent Cuban sandwiches. So off we went to give it a try. Continue reading

Plant

10424988_10152830411096142_6168952417592554782_n

Plant has been on my to go list forever, and I mean forever, it’s just been put off until now. But when my lovely vegan friend Derek came for a visit I knew that now was the time. Plant is a vegan restaurant run by Mipa the writer and all round wonderful lady that runs the Aliens Day Out Blog. The restaurant is small and quaint, serving up 2 different meals everyday as well as vegan baked goods, smoothies, and coffees. All the meals are written up on the chalk board and change daily. Continue reading

Calcotada

15489_10152803390796142_2811260502902280501_n

Finding new and cool places to eat is actually pretty easy these days, a walk around my neighborhood offers up a plethora of new options week in week out as more and more buildings are turned into eateries to feed the hordes of people visiting our hood. Last week I was invited by the owners to come and try the food at Calcotada in Gyeongridan. Located just up on the hill past the Police station, it’s hidden away from the crowds which I always find desirable in an eatery, ain’t nobody got time for queuing. Continue reading

Coreanos Kitchen – Vista

20140822-082523-30323443.jpg

People have been talking about Coreanos for months now, and I have heard from several different sources that they have the best Mexican in Seoul! With a claim like that I was more than eager to try it. But once again my laziness got in the way of me leaving my hood to actually go and eat there. But if Mohammed wont go to the mountain, the mountain will come to Mohammed and they very fortunately opened up a second store in Itaewon. Hurrah, all roads lead to Itaewon!

20140822-082526-30326535.jpg

I visited during their soft opening launch last week. We got there early, in just enough time to snag ourselves a window seat. Luckily the queuers hadn’t taken up their spots yet, but I’m sure it shan’t be long. The restaurant is large and set over two floors. Located on the hill just next to Berlin. After a good old gander of the menu we ordered up a whole host of tacos, a burrito, and a couple of cocktails.

20140822-082529-30329131.jpg

While we were waiting for our drinks we were presented with our complimentary chips and salsa. As you can see from the picture there are four kinds and it’s served in those adorable dishes. The spoons are probably a bit redundant, but it looks nice. The salsas varied in flavour and were rather scrumptious.

20140822-082526-30326842.jpg20140822-082528-30328330.jpg

After quickly devouring the chips, I glanced over to see our drinks being made. The bartender was using Rose’s lime cordial, a perfectly fine mixer if its going in a vodka soda lime, but not in a margarita (9,000) or a mojito (9,000). When my drink was presented my heart just fell. I tasted a sip and it fell even further. The manager asked me what I thought and I asked if they had any crushed ice.  He said he would blend it for me and throw in some extra rum. It was better, but it still awful. There is just no excuse for such a poorly made drink. I wish I had just sent it back, but it was busy and I didn’t want to cause a fuss (which strangely is very unlike me). I know the price of limes in Korea is ridiculous, and that most mojitos in Seoul using them cost around 15,000. Which I think is fine as long as they are exceptionally good. But there just isn’t any come back from using generic rum,  uncrushed ice, and synthetic lime syrup and calling it a mojito because there are a few mint leaves floating it it. You can get lime concentrate juice, frozen limes, or special mojito mixes and still make a decent drink and turn a good profit. So owners of Coreanos you owe me a drink, and I beg of you change the recipe or take it off the menu because its just not acceptable right now.

20140822-082527-30327321.jpg

The Margarita (9,000) tasted better than the mojito but really isn’t anywhere where it should be at that price. On the Border’s margaritas are cheaper and about 10,000 times better. So take note and work on the recipes. If need be I’m willing to offer my skills as a taste tester to help you improve!

20140822-082524-30324952.jpg

Thankfully the first round of tacos and showed up and really bucked up our spirits. We had ordered one of every flavour, as to not miss out on anything delicious. Above are the Galbi Beef (3,300) and the Braised Pork belly (3,600). I really enjoyed the braised pork belly, the meat was tender and and well flavoured, though combined with the taco it was a touch dry. A blob of sour cream or some dressing on top and it would be perfect. The Galbi one was nice enough too, though I can’t really say it was all that memorable.

20140822-082524-30324548.jpg

The Battered Fish taco (3,600) was the star of the day taco wise. You can’t beat a good bit of battered fish. The tartar sauce on top was delightfully fresh, and the red pickled onions balanced out the dish well. I would certainly get another one of these next time.

20140822-082525-30325309.jpg

We also ordered the Todos Burrito (12,000), which was tremendous! Stuffed with extra meat, beans, salad, sour cream, and guacamole. It was incredibly well balanced and tasty. It’s undisputedly the best burrito I have ever had in Korea, possible one of the best ever. Either way it was amazeballs.

We waited quite a while for the second set of tacos as they had lost our order, it being their soft opening and all I could live with that, if I hadn’t had to listen to the angry man at the next table screaming at the poor waitress as their order got mixed up too. Having been a waitress for a number of years in my youth I am fully aware that these things happen, especially during training. but it did dampen the evening a little. I have noticed a real trend towards soft opening these days, and I think its a great idea while everything gets perfected. However I do think if service and food aren’t quite up to standard yet restaurants should lower their prices by 10 or 20% to compensate for this. Our whole meal took over an hour and a half, which was frankly just too long for 5 tacos, a burrito, and a drink each.

20140822-082523-30323957.jpg

Eventually the second set of tacos arrived. We got the Citrus chicken (3,300) and the Grilled shrimp (4,000). The shrimp was nice enough but couldn’t compare to the Vatos shrimp taco which I would sell my own babies to eat. The chicken was the better of the two, a good mix between the zingy dressing and the flavour of spice braised chicken. I think after trying them at several different restaurants I’m just not sure if I’m sold on the whole corn tortillas thing. Call me crazy but I just prefer the wheat ones. I’m sure Mexican enthusiasts everywhere are calling me a culinary cretin but I just find them too thick and claggy. The wheat ones are what I know and love. I also enjoy the wafer thin ones you get at Vatos, but it’s horses for courses and just a matter of taste on my part.

20140822-082525-30325733.jpg

All in all I would give Coreanos another shot if only to get another burrito, in fact I would probably get two as they really are that good. But unless they get their cocktails up to par I would probably get it to go. Life’s too short for bad cocktails and for me they are integral part of the Mexican food experience.

Coreanos Vista is located at 457-3  Itaewon-Dong, Yongsan-Gu , Seoul. To get there  take a train to Noksapyeong station (line 6). Use the elevator to exit the building so you come out by the bridge. Walk over the bridge and turn right and follow the alley way around. Coreanos will be on your right just before Berlin and Buddha’s Belly.
